American Funds New World (NWFFX)

I've traveled to some interesting places in my life, such as Pakistan, Thailand, Ukraine, Russia. The cultures and languages are all fascinating. There are all kinds of people with so many different values and priorities. And yet, as the global economy continues to grow, you can see that there is a powerful, creative ability in all people that generates some amazing results when set free to do so.

American Funds New World is a go-anywhere fund that focuses on stocks relating to growth in emerging markets, such as Latin America, China, and India.

PIMCO High Income Fund (PHK)

I love the variety of foods available to us today. Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, I was always a fan of Tex-mex and confess I can't get enough of green chile now that I live in New Mexico. Indian food is a real treat; there is nothing like ChickenTikka Makhani! I enjoy classic American fare, fried chicken, hamburgers, steak, barbeque, and so on. But if given a choice when going out, I'm likely to choose something more spicy.

Closed-end funds are definitely more spicy than your average pooled investment.

Dimensional Funds US Micro Cap (DFSCX)

Watching children grow up is one of the most fascinating parts of life. In only a couple of years they go from helpless doll to tornado of destruction. They wobble around rooms making quick work of your order and organization. In another couple of years they begin to really dive into things with fearsome curiosity. By the time they are 10 or 11 years old they may have grown close to 1000% by weight!

Micro cap stocks give you the opportunity to participate in a similar kind of growth.

Vanguard Wellesley (VWINX)

Basketball really fascinates me. I love the fact that it provides a huge canvas to show off athleticism. I love the precision of shooting from long-range or finishing with some elaborate spin at the rim. The strategy of spacing and off-ball movement is really a work of art, when done well.

While many of the great moments of basketball come from the offensive end, when a team rises up to play elite defense something exciting happens in a game. Watching a player take a charge, or sprint back to stop a fast break, or fly into the paint to grab a rebound is electrifying.

Vanguard Wellesley has that kind of powerful defense.

What is an Oak Portfolio?

I've always loved trees. Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, there were weeping willows, maples, mulberries, pecan trees, and many, many more. Some were stunted and never got very big, like the sweet gum tree next to my driveway. The silver maple in my backyard stretched high above the power lines that skirted the edge of my back yard. We had oak trees, too.

North America has more species of Oak trees than any other continent. We have over 250 species between the United States and Mexico. I'd like to think that Oak trees are a good mascot for investing, because of their toughness.
